GABRIELA GUINEA JOHNSTON

Born in Mexico City, Gabriela Guinea Johnston lived for many years in the enchanting old barrio of Coyoacan, where she liked to visit many old colonial houses and churches. She studied History of Art at the Ibero Americana University in Mexico City and taught colonial architecture classes at the same university. She was also one of the founders of the University's Library of Slides, which was the first and is now one of most extensive in Mexico. Gaby has taught Art History at various educational institutions and acted as curator of several exhibitions. In addition, she has been a researcher of an important Mayan ceramic collection of Barbachano Ponce. She was curator and researcher also of the colonial painting collection from the house of the Jesuits in Mexico City, and acted as consultant and evaluator to the INBA (National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico City) related to their own slide library.

While working at the University, Gabriela was able to study a variety of subjects, including communications, creative writing, editing, musicology, psychology, and didactics. Gabriela has actively participated in theatre, both as a writer and an actress. One of her plays, "Fronteras" ("Borders") was presented in San Diego and San Marcos, after winning an award as part of the Fritz Theatre New Plays Project. In addition to being a playwright, Gabriela is also a published poet.

Gabriela is a born artist and communicator. She has enjoyed a lifelong involvement in communications. She has written editorials (in Spanish) for several newspapers in Mexico, Tijuana, and California. For many years she worked as Production Director and Community Affairs Director for Radio Latina, the leading Hispanic radio station in the Tijuana and San Diego area. In that capacity, she interviewed scholars, politicians, artists, and all kinds of celebrities.
